When the world of hairdressing is consistently changing, it is a breath of fresh air to visit a salon and see the same familiar friendly faces. These faces get to know you, and your families, and often close relationships are built. The longstanding team at Royston Blythe hair salons in Wolverhampton & Shrewsbury have shared the highs and lows of their clients’ lives and become not just their hairdresser but also their friend.
Royston Blythe started with a team of three 32 years ago. Over the years they have grown a team of loyal and dedicated colleagues that have been instrumental in the success of the business. One very special team member is Rita Mason. 2022 sees Rita celebrating 30 fabulous! The Jackie Onassis and very much loved mother of the team is infamous for her chic style and charm.

Rita was Royston Blythe’s first Receptionist in 1992 and ran this incredibly busy salon single handed. She knows everyone in Wolverhampton! With her flair and elegance, clients regularly seek her fashion advice and tips. She is the fountain of all knowledge (including home interiors), life issues and manages to find positivity in every situation.

80 years young this year (would you believe it?!), Rita continues to be the essence of the salon and is still at the helm on the busiest days to welcome everyone and keep an eye on the smooth running of the salon. To celebrate this milestone, Nick, Royston and the team invited Rita, her gorgeous daughters and close friends to Sunday lunch and party afterwards. Nick’s heartfelt words ensured there was not a dry eye in the house! And Rita, true to form was the first one up on the dancefloor as soon as the singer started – and the last one to leave it!

We asked Rita, “What is your favourite memory from the last 30 years?”

“I thank my best friend Jackie for introducing me to Nick & Royston, she said “you will love working with these boys”, and she was right! I have never looked back. We have shared both the sad times and the good, but the lad’s generosity and kindness has always been at the heart of everything. It has never felt like work. With lovely clients to chat with I laugh every day and I hope the fun never ends”.
Nick and Royston say: “Rita is incredibly special to us. She has defended and supported us throughout the years and is a true and loyal friend. We share so many memories, funny ones, naughty ones and the characters we still miss over the years. We just want her to carry on forever! Our only regret was our lovely friend Jackie Taylor couldn`t be with us today (you were missed) to celebrate our Rita but we send her all our love”.

Summer Trends

FACE-FRAMING FRINGES

The post-lockdown haircut is the ultimate 2021 beauty move, offering a hard reset after a year of overgrown bobs, faded colours, ponytails and loungewear. The fastest, most dramatic, youthifying change comes with a fringe and whether blunt and brow-grazing or light and layered, there’s bound to be one that appeals to you and complements your face shape. At Royston Blythe, we’re big fans of wide-cut fringes to really expose cheekbones as well as those choppier, more relaxed cut variations that are easier to manage at home. We love a tousled texture, brow-skimming fringe teamed with a subtle ombre colour for a summer signature statement style.

INVISIBLE LAYERS

Layers are back and you can rest assured that they have come such a long way: gone are the days when your stylist cut in layers to add a bit of body or make hair seem thicker. This season is all about invisible layers that are cut around the face, or throughout the lengths of longer hair to encourage that oh-so-desirable bouncy movement that we’re all craving as we enjoy the luxury of being back in the chair of our favourite hairdresser. Invisible Layers are a way of tapering or thinning out the ends, so when the hair falls on top of another piece of hair (in a layer), it falls almost invisibly, removing visibility of the ‘layered line’. An invisible layer is also perfect for clients with fine hair if they are after that summery, floaty, Parisian look.

The Miracle Worker For Coloured Hair: Olaplex

If you have coloured hair and love it to look healthy, glossy and full of vitality, there is one buzzword that you need to remember: OLAPLEX

Olaplex is something of a miracle worker for dehydrated and damaged hair and is especially relevant for those who love to lighten up! A breakthrough in hair care technology, Olaplex works by reconnecting broken disulphide sulphur bonds in the hair. In simple terms (yeh yeh, so we were just showing off!!), it works to protect and repair hair from the inside, rather on a surface level like most shampoos, conditioners and treatments would.

So, What Is Olaplex?

Olaplex is an intensive treatment that protects and repairs your hair and is usually mixed into hair colour, but can also be used before a blow-dry or during a cut & finish.

Inside our hair strands, a ladder-type network of ‘bonds’ exists that give the hair strength and form. These bonds get damaged and broken during chemical services (such as bleaching and colouring). Usually, 50-70% of these get rebonded after rinsing off your colour, but if you use Olaplex, 90-100% are rebonded; resulting in healthier and stronger hair!

How Exactly Is It Applied?

Olaplex is a three-part treatment; the first two will be done in our salon, and the third part you take home to use yourself.

Olaplex Step Number 1 and 2 will be applied by your colourist; they’ll mix the liquid-type no 1. substance into your colour bowl and then apply no.2 at the basin. If you’re having just a blow-dry service, or a cut & finish, your stylist will apply both the no.1 step followed by the no.2 step at the basin. There will be a 20 minute relaxation period where the treatment is left on the hair to work its magic before your hair is rinsed and blow dried by your stylist. Olaplex Step Number 3 (‘Hair Perfector’) is the take home service which you apply once a week. Apply to damp hair, comb through, and leave on for at least 10 minutes before shampooing and conditioning as normal. If you want to maximise the effect, KimK recommends leaving it on overnight!

Will I instantly notice a difference to my hair?

The effects are long lasting but yes your hair will feel sleeker and more manageable after colouring than it normally would. Your hair will gradually begin to feel stronger but as the treatment works internally during your colour processing, you should expect it to take a few repeat treatments before you notice a significant physical difference on the outside. Many clients do report that their hair feels stronger from their very first application. Olaplex also smoothes the hair, so it will immediately look sleeker, shinier and full of vitality.

Should I be asking for OLAPLEX when I visit Royston Blythe hair salon for a colour service?

Whatever your hair texture, OLAPLEX will work for you. It is beneficial for everyone who chemically treats their hair. Whether your hair is thick, dry, dull, volume-less, damaged, slightly damaged, beautifully healthy or absolutely in need of repair, Olaplex works! For curly, thick and fine hair – it will help reduce frizz, dullness, and even make curls more defined and luscious.

I’m a brunette. Do I need to bother with OLAPLEX?

Whilst OLAPLEX is a gamechanger for brunettes who want to go blonde (it allows hair to be lightened quicker and less aggressively), it is also a must for all brunettes as it promotes healthy, shiny glossy hair.

So is lightning up as the seasons shift really the way to go? Well why wouldn’t you? We all love to switch up our look now and again and whether you’re dark, red or blonde, adding a few lighter tones will certainly add interest to your hair! Root Stretching is a tried and tested technique that we love to use particularly with blondes – it has a low-key and low maintenance feel were we blend the darker colour from the root into the mid lengths and ends. The tones & shades used can be bespokely designed to make sure they really compliment your skin tone.

TIP: don’t ever be fooled into thinking that the root stretch is a lazy-girls, non-commitment option!
